Lease vs Buy: Financing Commercial Recovery Equipment in the UK
A commercial recovery fit-out is a serious capital decision. A plain-English look at the ways operators fund it — and how to think about which suits your business.
A commercial recovery fit-out is a serious capital decision. Here's a plain-English look at the ways operators fund it — and how to think about which suits your business.
The capital question
Recovery technology sits across a wide price range, from a few thousand pounds for a red-light panel to five- and six-figure systems for hyperbaric chambers and multi-modality suites. However you fund it, the goal is the same: match the way you pay to the way the equipment earns.
Buying outright
Paying up front is the simplest route and, over the life of the equipment, usually the cheapest — no interest, full ownership, and the asset on your balance sheet. The trade-off is the hit to cash flow and the opportunity cost of capital that could be working elsewhere in the business. For lower-cost items, or for operators with healthy reserves, outright purchase is often the sensible call.

Leasing and asset finance
For larger systems, leasing or asset finance spreads the cost into monthly payments that can be aligned with the revenue the equipment generates — so the machine, in effect, helps pay for itself. It preserves cash, is often tax-efficient (payments may be treated as an operating expense — check with your accountant), and makes bigger, better equipment accessible sooner. The trade-off is a higher total cost over time and a longer commitment.
Instalments for smaller kit
For sub-£15,000 systems bought online, instalment options through Shop Pay and similar make it easy to spread the cost without a formal finance application — a straightforward route for smaller studios adding a single modality.
How to decide
Weigh three things: your cash position, how quickly the equipment will generate revenue, and how long you expect to run it. Fast-earning, long-life equipment is a strong candidate for finance; low-cost or short-cycle items often make more sense bought outright. This is general information, not financial advice — your accountant should have the final word on what suits your business.
