We would rather tell you straight. The best-evidenced benefit is less muscle soreness and better recovery after hard training. Cold also produces a large, well-replicated rise in plasma noradrenaline (norepinephrine) that lifts alertness and focus, and it lowers circulating inflammation after exercise compared with resting. The evidence for mood is real but limited, and the popular idea that a 250% dopamine spike explains it is weak: that figure is peripheral dopamine measured during an hour at 14°C (Šrámek et al., 2000), it isn't sustained, and dopamine in the blood doesn't act on the brain the way people assume. Treat the headline percentages as the direction of travel, not a per-session promise. One honest downside: cold in the few hours straight after resistance training can blunt muscle and strength gains, so if building size is the goal, leave four to six hours or plunge on non-lifting days. And a good part of how good it feels is the ritual and the effort, not only the temperature.

Most healthy adults tolerate it well, but cold water carries real cardiac and drowning risk, so treat it with respect. Enter slowly, keep your head out and face dry, never hold your breath or hyperventilate in the water, and never plunge alone or after alcohol, then rewarm gradually afterwards. It isn't suitable if you have a heart condition, an arrhythmia, uncontrolled high blood pressure or a previous cardiac event, if you are pregnant, or with conditions such as Raynaud's, cold urticaria or epilepsy, seek medical advice first.
